Surreyi

Surreyi is a Local Information System providing data, information and analysis about the people, places, environment and economy of Surrey. The vision for Surreyi was to create a single point of entry for the collection of  and sharing of information about Surrey its people, places and issues.

The Requirements
Surrey County Council recognised the move towards the wider use of Local Information Systems across the UK and recognised the value that they were bringing to their users. The need to release data and evidence into the public domain was growing to enable collaborative working and evidence based policy making. It is now estimated that 50% of top tier authorities have developed a Local Information System or Data Observatory of some sort.

Surrey County Council wanted to introduce a greater level of automation to change the way they worked and to improve efficiencies. They envisaged greater co-ordination with partnerships to produce strategic outputs. The ability to pool resources from various partners and government sources in a jointly owned Local Information System and Data Observatory seemed an obvious step. A web based LIS would also for example facilitate a timelier and more cost effective way of compiling the Joint Strategic Needs Assessment(JSNA), a prime requirement for such a system. Once created the JSNA could be constantly updated over time as new data became available as envisaged by the original legislation.

The solution has provided invaluable resources to researchers, statisticians and all those involved in policy making. It is an effective way of managing datasets. As well as providing a huge information and  analysis resource to the Council and its partners, SURREYi has provided an important tool for the public, who now have easy access to vital statistics about their local area.
